The concept of an artificial, indoor golf course made its debut in Japan some years ago, but it has only been recently that the idea has caught on in North America. These indoor simulators, whether they are called "indoor driving ranges" or "3D golf simulators" offer a unique way to play the game without braving the elements.

The first simulator of its kind was built in Japan as a means for golfers to practice during the rainy season. For some years the technology would not be seen anywhere else, until an American company called Golfscape Inc. decided to import the simulation idea and build their own facility in Las Vegas. Not long after that, another American company, Golf Studios Inc., built a system called 3D Golf Simulation with better graphics and an outdoor component.

However, back in its home country of Japan, World View Systems had developed a much more realistic simulator than either American product. This simulator uses high-quality graphics and is able to track the speed and direction of each strike as well as measure how much backspin is added to each swing.
